In 2012, dozens of Zadig benches were placed in front of the Triennale, Milan's design museum, where they were a great success. Designed by Stéphane Chapelet, Zadig is a modular urban bench inspired by Japanese origami.
Inspired by origami, folded like paper
Zadig is made from laser-cut steel plates that are then folded. As in origami, the folds go alternately inwards and outwards, giving the bench its facets and sharp edges. These facets create very interesting shadow play that changes throughout the day.
Zadig, as in zigzag
The name Zadig evokes the word zigzag: going one way, then the other. It recalls these alternating folds, and the way the benches can be assembled in a broken line.
Modular and combinable
Individual Zadig units combine to create multiple seats. They can also be arranged in a zigzag to form innovative, modern ensembles. It was this modernity that won over the people of Milan in front of the Triennale.
Designed as a totem
Zadig was designed as a totem. Its highly innovative form makes it instantly recognisable: it becomes a landmark in the street.
Remarkable places
Zadig is now made in Italy by Lab23®. It has been very successful in remarkable places such as museums and lobbies. It can be found at the maritime museum in Bergen, Norway, at the iGuzzini headquarters in Barcelona, high on the island of Capri and in Moscow. In 2013, Lab23® presented it to the international press alongside Zaha Hadid's Serac bench.
Lab23, an Italian manufacturer, makes street furniture in Italy from steel, Corten, wood and Hypergranite. It shows the studio's designs alongside those of Zaha Hadid, at Milan's Fuorisalone and in the specialist press.
Lab23 presented Zadig in the Italian magazine Architettura del Paesaggio (issue 24, 2011). In 2013, the international magazine Dezeen mentioned it in its article on Zaha Hadid's Serac bench, another of the manufacturer's designs.
