Crossed.
Crossed is a public bench designed by Stéphane Chapelet, inspired by the branches on the facade of Toyo Ito's Tod's building in Tokyo. Made of laser-cut, folded steel, it casts shadows that draw branches and gives streets, parks and squares a unique presence.
Inspired by Toyo Ito's Tod's building
The Crossed pattern is inspired by the branches that shape the facade of the Tod's Omotesando building in Tokyo, designed by Toyo Ito, one of the studio's reference architects. Like that facade, the bench evokes crossed branches, which gave it its name: Crossed.
Shadows that draw branches
Its openwork surface lets light through and casts shadows on the ground that draw branches. They change throughout the day and extend the bench's design into the space around it.
A laser-cut steel sheet, folded five times
Its originality lies in its production process: a steel sheet, powder-coated or corten, laser-cut and then folded five times. This simple process creates a minimalist, inspired product with a strong personality, sturdy outdoors.
Complete designs
The bench belongs to a complete family, with a seat, bin, planter and bollards. The iGuzzini headquarters in Barcelona was designed with the full Crossed collection, combined with Horizon and Zadig benches. It can also be found at the Hilton Lac-Leamy hotel in Canada, high on the island of Capri and, in its concrete version, on the Jeddah Corniche.
Made in Italy
Crossed is made in Italy by Lab23® and sold in Spain in partnership with iGuzzini®.
Lab23, an Italian manufacturer, makes street furniture in Italy from steel, Corten, wood and Hypergranite. It shows the studio's designs alongside those of Zaha Hadid, at Milan's Fuorisalone and in the specialist press.
The Crossed range was the subject of a three-page feature in the Spanish magazine Diseño de la Ciudad (issue 82, June 2012). Lab23 presented it at Milan's Fuorisalone and in the Italian magazine Paysage / Topscape (issue 7).
