Capri.
High up on the island of Capri, Italy, a project brings together the Crossed seats and Zadig benches designed by Stéphane Chapelet for Lab23®. Both families are made of laser-cut, folded steel, and suit the island's landscape through their lightness and their shadow play.
High above Capri
On the island of Capri, street furniture must respect an exceptional landscape. High up on the island, the transparency of the Crossed seats and the facets of the Zadig benches let them fit in without weighing down the site.
Crossed, branches in steel
The Crossed seat is inspired by the branches on the facade of Toyo Ito's Tod's building in Tokyo. It is made from a 4 mm steel sheet, laser-cut with the Crossed texture, then folded. Two steel plates welded to the sides draw its outline. In the sun, the cut-outs cast branch-like shadows on the ground that change throughout the day.
Zadig, origami in steel
The Zadig bench is inspired by Japanese origami. It is made of three modules, each with a different shape, each cut from a single 5 mm steel sheet folded to form the supports, the seat and the feet. The folds go alternately inwards and outwards, and the modules assemble in a zigzag: hence its name.
Two families in dialogue
Crossed and Zadig share the same process: a laser-cut, folded steel sheet, galvanised and then powder-coated in the RAL colour of your choice, or made in corten steel on request. Together, they create a coherent setting where the shadows of the cut-outs echo the facets of the folds.
A family found around the world
The Crossed range (benches, seats, bins, planters, bollards) also furnishes the Jeddah Corniche, the iGuzzini headquarters in Barcelona and the grounds of the Hilton Lac-Leamy hotel in Canada. In Marrakech, Crossed bins were selected through a public tender. Zadig benches stand in front of the Milan Triennale, at the maritime museum in Bergen, at the iGuzzini headquarters and in Moscow.
Lab23, an Italian manufacturer, makes street furniture in Italy from steel, Corten, wood and Hypergranite. It shows the studio's designs alongside those of Zaha Hadid, at Milan's Fuorisalone and in the specialist press.
This model belongs to the Crossed range, to which the Spanish magazine Diseño de la Ciudad devoted three pages (issue 82, June 2012).
